Type I, II, and III: what the commercial vinyl weight classes actually specify

The classes on a commercial vinyl data sheet come from a published standard, not marketing. What CFFA-W-101-D and ASTM F793 define, the weight ranges commonly cited, and where each type belongs.

A commercial wallcovering data sheet almost always opens with a type designation, and it is not shorthand invented by the mill. Type I, II, and III come from the Chemical Fabrics and Film Association's specification for vinyl-coated wallcovering, CFFA-W-101-D, which classifies the goods by total weight per unit area together with a set of physical-performance minimums that rise with each class.

The weight bands are the fast read, though sources differ on the exact cutoffs and the figures should always be confirmed against the current standard and the manufacturer's own sheet. As commonly cited in the trade, Type I is light duty — on the order of 7 to 13 ounces per square yard — for surfaces that take little contact: above chair-rail height, ceilings, private offices. Type II is medium duty, roughly the low-teens to low-twenties in ounces, and is the workhorse of commercial interiors: corridors, lobbies, dining rooms, most guest-contact walls. Type III is heavy duty, at the top of the weight range (various references put the threshold around 20-plus ounces), held back for high-abuse zones such as circulation cores and back-of-house. Heavier material resists impact, abrasion, and puncture better; it also costs more and hangs less easily, so specifying Type III everywhere is a genuine budget leak rather than a safety margin.

Running parallel to the CFFA classes is ASTM F793, the Standard Classification for Wallcovering by Use Characteristics, which sorts wallcovering into six use categories by tested serviceability rather than by weight alone. Its upper categories track the commercial duty levels and reference the same performance tests, which is why a thorough specification cites both a CFFA type and an ASTM F793 category — one pins the physical class of the goods, the other the tested-use bracket they qualify for.

The point of the type line is to let a specifier match material to location rather than to a whole building. A single interior often wants Type II in its public rooms, Type I on protected upper walls and ceilings, and Type III only where carts, luggage, or gurneys strike the wall daily. A designer who reads the type against each room's actual exposure will neither over-build a private office nor under-protect a loading corridor.
