Estimating and ordering wide goods: yards, dye lots, and attic stock
Commercial wallcovering is sold and hung differently from residential rolls. How to estimate 54-inch wide goods, protect run continuity, and order the reserve a facility will need.
Commercial wallcovering is usually 54 inches wide and sold by the linear yard, commonly on bolts of about 30 linear yards, though roll length varies by manufacturer and should be confirmed on the cut sheet. That geometry changes the estimating math compared with narrow residential rolls, and getting both the arithmetic and the ordering discipline right is what keeps a large installation from stalling halfway up a corridor.
Start with a worked example. A 54-inch (4.5-foot) bolt of 30 linear yards (90 feet) is 4.5 x 90 = 405 square feet, about 45 square yards of face material before any waste. Estimators convert wall square footage to linear yards, then add waste for pattern repeat, drop matching, cutting, and trim, so the usable coverage per bolt is meaningfully lower than that gross figure. A random-match texture wastes little; a large straight- or drop-match pattern wastes considerably more, because every strip must align to its neighbor and the offcuts grow with the repeat. Doors, windows, and short returns add cutting waste that a flat square-foot figure hides, which is why seasoned estimators pad the raw number rather than trust it.
Dye lot — the manufacturer's production run number — is the discipline that separates a clean wall from a patchwork one. Color can shift subtly between runs, so all goods for one continuous visual field must come from a single lot. On a large project that means ordering the full quantity at once and confirming the run on delivery; a mid-job reorder from a later lot can leave a visible band of color change across an otherwise uniform corridor.
Attic stock is the reserve that protects the building after the crew leaves. A sound specification calls for extra material from the same run, sealed and stored on site, so a damaged panel can later be replaced with an exact match rather than a close guess. The teams that skip it learn the cost at the first repair, when the only goods available are a different lot — or the line has been discontinued. A specification that names an attic-stock quantity, in the same run, sealed and stored on site, is what makes that later repair a swap rather than a re-do of the whole wall.
